The Seychelles Islands Environment- Recif Island

The picturesque islands of the Seychelles are located in the Indian Ocean about 1,600 kilometres East of Kenya and are an archipelago of 115 tropical islands. The Seychelles islands can be divided into 2 distinct groups of: Granitic or Coral islands.

The Mahe Group consists of 42 granite islands, which have a thin coastal strip and a central range of mountains rising as high as 914 meters. Mahe is the largest island in the Seychelles and is a granitic island which hosts the Capital of the Seychelles Republic - Victoria. While the coral islands of the Seychelles are flat with coral reefs and tend to have less habitation than the granitic islands.

The Seychelles recently has declared another of their 115 islands to be a Special Reserve.

“Every year during the breeding season, between May and October, staff of the Department of Environment are actively in engaged in the protection of the island against poachers.

“The strategy has its limitations, as for the rest of the year when there is nobody on the island poachers do as they please with the resident seabirds. Since Recif is currently not under any form of legal protection, poachers apprehended are often released with minimal sanctions.”
But the good news is this has now all changed  as the island of Rectif is now a Special Reserve. Miss Jeremie from the Department of Environment said ...'designating Recif as a special reserve will give it the necessary legal protection it needs, ensuring that no form of illegal harvesting is allowed. The protected area status will also provide a legal basis to prosecute poachers'
