Etihad Acquires large stake in Air Seychelles

The Seychelles islands National Airline- Air Seychelles received a huge boost financially today as it was reported that Etihad had acquired a 40% stake in the National Carrier. It has been reported that Air Seychelles will fly within the next year to new destinations such as Abu Dhabi, Bangkok, Hong Kong, and Beijing. The new routes will also require the acquisition of new aircraft's and it has been stated they will look into new Airbus planes to expand the fleet. The good news for the main markets feeding the Seychelles Tourism Industry is that direct flights from Seychelles to Europe will also be considered again once the airline is in a better financial position.

SEYCHELLES GOVERNMENT AND ETIHAD AIRWAYS TEAM UP IN NEW STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP IN AIR SEYCHELLES LTD.

The Government of Seychelles and Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding wherein Etihad will invest to acquire a 40 per cent stake in Air Seychelles Ltd as part of a strategic partnership alliance initiative between Air Seychelles and Etihad Airways.

The deal was announced today by Joel Morgan, Seychelles Minister of Home Affairs, Environment, Transport and Energy and James Hogan, President and Chief Executive Officer of Etihad Airways.

Etihad Airways’ investment of USD 20 million will be matched by an equal capital injection from the Government of Seychelles. In addition, Etihad Airways will also provide a shareholder’s loan of USD 25 million to meet working capital requirements and support network development.

Mr Morgan said: “This is a game-changing strategic partnership for us, establishing Air Seychelles on a sustainable growth trajectory and offering a realistic way forward for long-term commercial growth.”

“The partnership simultaneously provides international presence, strategic penetration and a bright future for our national carrier.”

“The aviation industry is under enormous pressure right now, with small airlines especially vulnerable to global economic instability and ongoing oil price volatility. In this context, consolidation offers the best possible solution for Air Seychelles. This agreement will allow Air Seychelles to share the benefits of the visionary strategy of one of the world’s leading airlines and leverage its economies of scale and synergies.”

Mr Hogan said: “This deal is consistent with our approach to expansion, which relies on the strength of strategic partnerships across the globe. The investment in the national carrier of Seychelles is a natural next step towards growing our operations in the increasingly important leisure markets of the Indian Ocean and Africa.

“The Seychelles is a renowned leisure destination and its tourism industry is surging, as indicated by record-setting visitor numbers for the island nation in 2011. There is a need for greater connectivity to support this tourism boom, and both Air Seychelles and Etihad Airways are well-positioned to leverage that demand into substantial commercial growth.

The integration of the networks will give Air Seychelles greater opportunity to tap into key tourism feeder markets across Europe – such as Germany, France, Italy and the UK – where Etihad Airways’ presence is strong and growing.”

Asia, and more specifically China, is increasingly important to the Seychelles national economy. Apart from the Seychelles strategic geographic significance as a stepping stone between China and Africa, the island nation is also an important trading partner for Chinese business and an increasingly popular leisure destination for significant numbers of Chinese travellers.

The agreement, which is the first of its kind in Africa, makes for provision for a five-year management contract for Etihad Airways which will see the implementation of strategic measures to encourage Air Seychelles’ long-term commercial growth.

Importantly, the partnership will offer unprecedented career development opportunities and access to Etihad Airways state-of-the-art training academy and facilities in Abu Dhabi for Seychellois aviation professionals.

Etihad Airways has achieved a high level of success in encouraging and facilitating the professional growth and increased presence of nationals in the organisation following the implementation of its localisation program, and will support a similar knowledge and skill transfer for Seychellois within Air Seychelles.

Another important element of the agreement gives Air Seychelles office presence in Etihad Airways offices across the Etihad Airways network. This means vastly improved marketing possibilities for the country and its national carrier.

Finally, the new partnership will further drive consolidation of key functions, resulting in significant cost savings and process optimisation.

Also under the partnership:

Etihad Airways will seek to increase frequency of flights between Abu Dhabi and Mahé from four per week to daily, as well as providing new services to the islands;
Etihad Airways will work in conjunction with Air Seychelles to develop a renewed fleet and network growth plan for the island-based carrier;
The airlines will sign a comprehensive codeshare agreement to include Etihad Airways-marketed flights across Air Seychelles’ network and Air Seychelles-marketed flights to Abu Dhabi and Etihad Airways destinations across Europe, the Middle East, the GCC, Asia and Australia.
Etihad Guest and Seychelles Bonus, the airlines’ frequent flyer programs, will be integrated to include mileage earning and redemption on each other’s flights.

This agreement is Etihad Airways’ second equity investment, following its December 2011 announcement that it would increase its stake in airberlin to 29.21 per cent, making it the single biggest shareholder in Europe’s sixth largest airline.

Today we share with you the merits of the fantastic fruit knows as pawpaw or papaya.

Pawpaw or papaya was called the "fruit of the angels" by Christopher Colombus and has many benefits. Fresh pawpaw improves digestion and prevents heart disease,colon cancer, arthritis, lung disease and eye disorders. This tropical fruit is also effective in fighting cold and flu symptoms.

Recipe of today: Papay Tournen:

Ingredients:

500g Papwpaw

250gr Sugar

1 Cup Water

1tsp of Vanilla Essence

1 pinch of Grated Nutmeg

Instructions:

1. Cut the pawpaw into segments, peel and wash, slice very thin lengthwise.

2. Place in hot water for 3 minutes.

3. Drain off water, put slices in a clean cloth and squeeze the contents dry.

4. Spread out in the sun on a clean cloth to dry completely turning frequently.

5. Boil sugar and water in a pan until golden/caramelized and remove from heat.

6. Mix in the vanilla essence, nutmeg and dried pawpaw. Leave in the pan for at least 1 week at room temperature. ( No way it will be eaten by then)

7. After 1 week -store contents in well sealed glass jars.

Can be served with ice cream or enjoyed on its own.

Air Seychelles repositions and will restructure

November 17th, 2011 - The Government has agreed with the intent of Air Seychelles to consolidate and reposition as a regional carrier with focus on the profitable routes. However it will continue some of its long haul flights temporarily. Air Seychelles will be entering into code share agreements with Etihad Airways and other airlines as the business requires for the uptake of passengers affected by the discontinued flights and seats vacated by Air Seychelles.

Air Seychelles Chief Executive Officer, Bram Steller said that capacity on flights into and out of Seychelles has been increasing rapidly over the last few years. The take up by market demand has not been forthcoming as fast. As a consequence, flights of various airlines generate a lower cabin factor (% of seats occupied) than necessary for profitable operations.

“ Air Seychelles has seen its market share decrease continuously for the last few years. The result has been that profitability on the long haul routes of Air Seychelles for more than two years has dwindled from marginally profitable to serious losses,” Mr Steller said.

The situation has become worse as the Falklands Charter contract of the UK’s Ministry of Defence was lost in September this year. Therefore, the two Boeing 767-200 aircraft were returned to the lessor in October before the expiry of the lease.

The Government has had to step in with financial support over this last year. This situation has become unsustainable for government from its budgetary standpoint.

Air Seychelles has remained loss generating on its international routes since the start of the financial year in April 2011 and the projected losses have only become worse over the last few months as the forward bookings have stagnated and remained significantly under last year’s bookings. This is partly due to severe financial crisis being faced by many European countries.

In order to reduce its losses, Air Seychelles will cease its London flights to Heathrow via Italy’s Rome and Milan after 8th January 2012. Meanwhile it will cancel some flights in between on this route when there are low booked loads.

Flights to Paris-CDG will be scaled down as per 10th January from five to three weekly flights operating in both directions with the preferred night schedule. It will cease operations to Paris by the 25th March 2012.
Following recent negotiations, Etihad has accepted to fly passengers already booked on Air Seychelles flights out of Paris, London and Milan at the rates already ticketed by Air Seychelles and via Air France to Paris.

A meeting was held in Abu Dhabi last week between Etihad and Air Seychelles officials to discuss further co-operation between both airlines about better joint fares and an eventual codeshare agreement.
Etihad has offered very attractive pro-rates to Air Seychelles on its international network operating to the US, Europe, Pakistan, India, China, Bangkok and Australia. In return, Air Seychelles has reciprocated by offering Etihad seats and special fares on its destinations.The agreement between Air Seychelles and Etihad is expected to be signed next week.

As part of the national airline’s restructuring process, the contracts of several expatriate captains, engineers and ground operations staff will be terminated. This will also affect staff at European stations.
Through a comprehensive retrenchment plan with the Ministry responsible for Employment, Air Seychelles will also be redeploying Seychellois staff to other departments within the airline and to other sectors in the national economy.

A similar team as the one which assisted Government’s own retrenchment program in 2008-9 will work closely with Air Seychelles to re-position staff and to have a smooth transition for redeployment.
Mr Steller also announced that Air Seychelles will immediately be making the necessary arrangements to plan the return of the three Boeing 767-300 aircraft, which cost the airline some Euros 1m per month in fixed costs.

A high level delegation from Seychelles will soon meet with the aircraft lessor to organise the early return of the existing B767-300 aircraft.

For the profitable regional operations, Air Seychelles is looking for a new B737-800 as the most appropriate rightsized aircraft to enhance its regional operations. Potential flights to India and Abu Dhabi for Asian connections with Etihad to bring in more diverse tourism are being explored.

In particular, the South African market has seen a healthy growth for which this Christmas season an additional 6 flights have been scheduled.

At the same time, Air Seychelles will apply extra emphasis to its profitable domestic operations and handling of aircraft, passengers and cargo.

We had the most wonderful family outing recently when wetook all the kids rock climbing at a newly opened adventure sports center onMahe Island Seychelles. They offer a number of different levels and the kids all tried theyellow route which is the beginner grade 12 . The owners are truly wonderful andencouraging and helped the kids climb and ring the bell which was placed at acertain level. It was an awesome experience for the children who have notstopped speaking about their rock climbing experience.

Needless to say after much encouragement from the children Idecided to give this rock climbing a bash myself. And you wonder… well it isgreat fun, great exercise and an awesome feeling when you reach the top. Afterthe beginner grade I got my confidence and went for an intermediate grade which takes that muchmore effort and thinking as you need to find the natural crevices in the rockface. You are strapped and totally secure once reaching the top you ab saildown. I am now absolutely hooked on rock climbing and will definitely go backwith the kids to do more.

I highly recommend rock climbing to all as a wonderful dayouting with kids or merely with your partner. It is a great day out in the Seychelles. Do try it.

Following a press release from the Seychelles Maritime and SafetyAdministration, please be informed that the ban on swimming at Anse Lazio hasbeen lifted following the installation of an ‘Exclusion net’ in front of BonbonPlume Restaurant, effective immediately. Please take note however, thatswimming and other related activities are limited to within the perimeter ofthe exclusion net ONLY. Tourism police officers will still bepresent on the beach to advise and guide tourists.

A second and third net will be installed at Anse Lazio and PetiteAnse kerlan in the coming days and we will keep you updated on the progress.

The ban on swimming and/or entering the sea in other areas as perprevious communiqués (i.e. Anse Georgette, Petite Anse Kerlan, Grand Anse Kerlan, StPierre island and Curieuse island) remain in force, until further notice. Forall other areas tourists are still advised to swim close to the beach, within ashort distance and not to go into deep water.

The KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board, Seychelles Tourism Board and the Seychelles Hotel Association have published the following document for all the Seychelles Hotels, guesthouses and Seychelles self catering properties to publish for our clients.

Best practices: how to reduce the risk of shark attack.

A shark attack is a rare event, despite the fact that millions of people enter the sea each day around the world. There are 50-100 unprovoked attacks each year. Certain countries, including USA, Australia and South Africa, experience more attacks than others. Seychelles is not regarded as a hotspot for shark attacks, so the two fatal shark attacks on Praslin in August 2011 came as a huge shock and surprise.

ADVICE FOR SWIMMERS AND SNORKELERS

The following advice is offered to swimmers and snorkellers in Seychelles to prevent further attacks:

Don’t swim/snorkel alone. Remain in groups as sharks are more likely to attack solitary individuals.

Avoid swimming/snorkelling at dawn, dusk and at night. Sharks are most active at these times.

Remain close inshore. The risk of encountering larger sharks increases with distance from shore; one is also further away from help.

Stay out of the water if bleeding or menstruating. Sharks can detect, and may be aroused by, very small quantities of blood.

Avoid areas with lots of fishing activity and unusual fish activity. These activities attract sharks. Diving/ feeding sea birds are a good indicator of this.

Avoid areas with steep drop offs and channels. These areas enable large sharks to access shallow water.

Use beaches with a very gradual slope to the seabed. The shallow waters may be a deterrent to the inshore movement of large sharks.

Use beaches with fringing reefs and large rock structures. Although reefs have far more fish (shark food) than sandy bottoms, the rocks can also act as natural barriers to the inshore movement of sharks.

Avoid murky water, flooding river mouths and harbour entrances. These areas are often frequented by sharks.

Avoid areas where lots of human waste is discarded. Discarded fish and animal remains attract sharks. Do not carry bait or food on your person.

Stay away from dead animals in the water or on the water’s edge. Their smell often attracts scavenging sharks.

Don’t wear shiny jewellery. A Shark may mistake the relfection as a fish.

Avoid highly contrasting swimwear. Orange and yellow are regarded as the most risky colours.

Avoid heavy splashing. A commotion on the surface may attract or arouse a shark.

The presence of dolphins is a false sense of security. Sharks and dolphins feed on the same prey (fish) and large sharks occasionally feed on dolphins.

Don’t antagonise a shark.

Seek local advice about shark activity. Locals, especially the fishermen, know their area best.

ADVICE FOR FISHERMEN

Fishermen also need to be aware that their own activities could pose to the safety of swimmers and snorkellers alike.

Fishermen should heed the following:

Don’t discard fish and other food (animal) remains close to swimming beaches. The smell can attract a shark onshore.

Don’t fish at popular swimming beaches. Struggling fish attract sharks.

Alert swimmers and snorkellers to any shark sightings.

Alert swimmers and snorkellers to any unusual fish activity. Sharks are fish feeders and will be attracted to such areas.

ADVICE FOR SCUBA DIVERS

Scuba diving is an extremely safe sport with a very low risk of shark attack. This is because the large volumes of exhaled air are likely to deter most sharks and this takes place in clear water, with minimal splashing at the surface. It is not unusual for divers to see sharks, and for experienced divers this can be the highlight of the dive. For novice divers such an experience can be unsettling. It is therefore important for the dive leader to brief the group on how to respond in the event of a shark sighting and to reassure the group that some sharks, such as nurse and white tip reef sharks, pose no threat and even the highly aggressive species (bull and tiger) rarely attack. A relaxed group of divers is likely to enjoy a highly rewarding shark experience.

Scuba divers should heed the following:

An aroused shark will swim quickly with jerky movements and will approach very close to the divers.

A curious shark may approach close to the divers but will be swimming slowly.

A disinterested shark will make a single approach and then move away.

Dive in groups or at least pairs. To dive alone is never wise.

Avoid excessive splashing at the surface. This may attract sharks.

Descend quickly but calmly. Look around you during your descent.

Don’t take fish scraps to feed fish.

Never touch, trap or harass a shark. Even a timid shark may bite in self-defence.

Relax and avoid using hands as paddles. Jerky movements could scare timid sharks (and fish) or arouse potentially aggressive sharks.

Ascend slowly and exit the water quickly and quietly. Spend minimal time at the surface.

If a large shark is sighted, the dive leader should respond as follows:

Call the group together; Ensure that all the members remain calm and stationary, Observe the shark's behaviour, eye contact is important, Identify the shark to determine if it is an aggressive species (tiger, bull or great white);

Depending on the shark’s identity/behaviour, remain stationary on the bottom until the shark leaves, then consider aborting the dive.

As many of you know we have our extended family with our Seychelles Giant Tortoises on our property close to the Chalets. We find our Giant Tortoises are enjoyed by our guests.

But we do find that a lot of our guests do not realise how sensitive these amazing animals are and today we would like to share with you abit more information on the Aldabara Giant Tortoises of the Seychelles.

The best diet for a tortoise includes a variety of leaves, grasses, vegetables, and fruit. Grass and leaves are especially important because they put fiber in their diet and cleanses their intestines. Small amounts of fruit are beneficial. But soft fruit is best served on a clean surface so it doesn't get covered by sand and mud which can clog the gut of our tortoise and make them ill.

Tip: Avoid feeding our tortoises rice, bread, meat, fish or milk products. They are not capable of digesting such food.

Tortoises love to bath in pools of water or wallow in the soft beach sand. But it is important for them to have dry areas to roam in otherwise they can suffer skin and shell rot, digestive problems and body deformities. They also require a fresh supply of water for drinking and room to exercise their muscles.

Please note: Tortoises do not like people sitting on them, standing on them, or riding them. Never scrape or scratch the sensitive skin between the scales that cover the shell, as this is very painful for the tortoise.

MARITIME SAFETY ADVISORY PRESS COMMUNIQUE UPDATE

After four days of intensive collection of data and information in an effort to build a clear picture of what caused the shark attacks at Anse Lazio, the South African experts i.e. Mr. Michael Anderson Reaves and Mr. Geremy Cliff met with the Emergency Committee to brief them on their preliminary findings and also present their recommendations. The meeting was chaired by Minister Morgan with senior officers of key agencies in attendance and these included the Principal Secretary of Environment, CEO of the Seychelles Maritime Safety Administration (SMSA), CEO of the National Parks Authority (NPA), Deputy CEO of the Seychelles Tourism Board (STB), representatives of the Police, the Seychelles Fisheries Authority (SFA) and the CEO of the Seychelles Hospitality and Tourism Association (SHTA).

The experts presented the history of shark attacks around the world and the impact it has had on the economies of coastal cities relying on coastal tourism like Durban. They showed the Committee the various methods applied in South Africa and Australia to catch large sharks such as gill nets, long lines and drumlines.

They explain that these are used in very popular swimming areas in combination with other safety measures in an effort to remove any potentially dangerous sharks before they can attack swimmers. In many cases, these are deployed with exclusion nets which act as a barrier, preventing any shark from entering the area used by swimmers. The South African experts also touched on a series of other best practises applied in South Africa, Australia, the Caribbean and other parts of the world where there are much greater numbers of shark attacks. For example a good system of surveillance and monitoring are used as part of prevention measures and a rapid response system supported by the availability of emergency shark attack first aid pack in the immediate vicinity of popular beaches form part of their response strategy. Based on the information and recommendations provided by the experts the Emergency Committee led by Minister Morgan took a series of decisions.

1. The tooth of the shark will be sent to South Africa for further research to determinethe identity of the shark. DNA tests are to be conducted on it.

2. Erect two exclusion nets at Anse Lazio as soon as possible to facilitate swimming in the area and another one at Petite Anse Kerlan. These will be set up as trials and as temporary measures. Praslin Development Fund has been given the responsibility to lead this particular activity.

3. In an effort to provide greater safety for swimmers the Seychelles Fisheries Authority has been given the responsibility to coordinate and manage the use of drumlines just outside these swimming areas.

4. Seychelles Fisheries Authority will intensify their research on bull and tiger sharks in Seychelles coastal waters. The study exists already but now will be given higher priority.

5. Seychelles Maritime Safety Administration is to intensify its work in enforcing against pleasure boats that dispose of their waste at sea especially in coastal waters.

6. Seychelles Maritime Safety Administration will import emergency shark attack first aid packs and place them at strategic points on popular beaches. The Administration will employ and train life guards in using them.

7. Monitoring and surveillance plans will be developed for strategic areas.

8. An emergency protocol will be developed and personnel of key agencies will be trained in using them.

9. The South African experts will develop a list of best practices that will be shared with all concerned.

10. The Seychelles government will make a formal request to the Kwazulu Natal Shark Board with the aim of establishing long term cooperation between the Board and the Seychelles government. The aim is to obtain the assistance of the South African experts to assist government in building a robust institutional framework to address the local shark problem.

The experts are now more confident that it was a tiger shark that attacked the victims at Anse Lazio. This morning a four metres tiger shark was caught off the coast of Grand Anse Praslin. Its guts was removed and examined but no human remains were found in it.

It must be noted that after so many days it will be difficult for any remains to be found. The Government wishes to thank all those who have so far contributed positively towards finding tangible solutions in tackling this very difficult situation; special mention goes out to the Hospitality Industry, the people of Praslin, the Praslin Fishermen and Praslin Development Fund.

The ban on swimming in Anse Lazio, Grand Anse Kerlan, Petite Anse Kerlan, Anse Georgette, Curieuse and St. Pierre is still in force. In other areas swimmers and divers are being asked to take all necessary precautions.

Tom Bowers Sculpture:

Tom Bowers was born in London in 1936.

At an early age he was fortunate enough to spend some of his time in the countryside, where he used riverbed clay to form some of the African animals that he dreamed of seeing one day.

Tom was fortunate to gain his first employment, at the age of 14, with a taxidermist. During this employment Tom was given the opportunity to study the bone structure and musculature of many different species.

He later enrolled into the local art college, where he studied both sculpture and graphic art. During his time at college he gained an interest in photographyand spent some time at a specialist college of photography and film in Guildford.

Tom then made the decision to work freelance in the advertising world, opening a photographic studio in London.

At the beginning the work consisted of photographing fashion, cars, jewellery, drinks, for magazine and; newspaper adverts, as well as room sets and; specialist items for corporate brochures, but eventually evolved into mainly food and drink photography, including T.V. commercials.

Tom never lost his sculpture skills, as advertising agencies would ask for ’props’ that were not available anywhere and Tom used these skills to aid them.

Discovering a product that was developed for the military as an emergency repair material, and was perfect for producing items quickly –he began once more to make sculpture that pleased him. As he never wished to be an ’old photographer’, he made the decision to go back to sculpting, possibly in a place of natural beauty.

During this time he took the family on holiday to the Seychelles (1981) and was captured by the beauty and lifestyle of the people.

After a few more visits, and researching plans for the future in Seychelles, he and the family were convinced that there was a quality of life to be found in a developing country with so much to offer.

The move was made in 1986, leaving behind colleagues who were perplexed that he could give up so much to go to a remote location where, in their eyes, there was nothing.

Tom is still using the same material to make the original sculptures and from these a mould is made to produce bronzes of top International quality in limited editions.

We notified the Marine Conservation Society of the Seychelles who arrived this morning and now are monitoring the beach for further tracks.

The Hawksbill Turtle nesting season is usually from October to Februrary so this is a very early for the turtle nesting season in the Seychelles.

Marine Safety Press Release Update

The shark Experts, Mr. Geremy Cliff and Mr. Michael Anderson-Reade, from the Kwazulu- Natal Sharks Board arrived in Seychelles yesterday morning on the Air Seychelles Flight from South Africa. In the afternoon they met with senior government representatives from the Seychelles Maritime Safety Administration, Environment Department, Praslin Development Fund and the Police to discuss their work programme over the next 6 days.

According to their Terms of Reference they will assist the Government of Seychelles with the following:

Comprehensive prevention and safety measures:
Determine and propose a comprehensive list of prevention and safety measures that the authorities need to apply, the geographical extent and the length of time these will be required to lower the possibility of a shark attack. These should include advisories to swimmers and divers, surveillance systems and rescue respond measures and first aid accessibility.

Elimination of the potential danger:

Identification of the shark species and size from the information available and determine what may have triggered or cause the attacks. What methods can be utilized to abate or remove the particular shark threat?

Other contributing factors:

Identify and list other biological and anthropogenic contributing factors that may need to be considered such as disposal of food sighting. This is being supported by patrol boats from Seychelles National Parks, local fishermen and the Coast Guard.

The government of Seychelles wishes to reiterate that it is against putting a bounty on sharks and the indiscriminate killing of sharks. It wishes to reaffirm the fact that it will apply internationally accepted best practices to address the problem based on advice from the shark experts.

In the meantime all fishermen who catch a shark are being asked to report to Mr. Rodney Quatre, the Research manager of the National Parks Authority who is collecting data on sharks. His phone number is 2726104.

Do your offer Transfers from the Airport: It is very easy to organise for our clients a transfer from the airport- merely request this when booking your room. Or else there is a taxi stand at the arrivals and you can catch a taxi to your destination with minimum hassles.

Excursions/What to do in the Seychelles: We have a few different blogs on ideas on what to do in the Seychelles....

Transport: To explore the island we do recommend a car hire and we would recommend Pirates car Hire located on our premises. The other options for transport on the island are by local bus- an experience or via taxi. We can also organise excursions trips on the islands of Praslin and La Digue.

Clothing in the Seychelles: Light clothing is best suited for the warm tropical climate that the Seychelles enjoys all year round. Sandals and open shoes are also highly recommended. If you enjoy snorkeling it would be best to wear a T shirt to protect your back from sunburn. For an evening meal at a same Seychelles restaurants and hotels you may need long pants for men and a more formal outfit for the ladies. You will find that you will spend most of your holiday in Seychelles in your Costumes and pareos so do ensure you bring your favourites along.

Hats and sunglasses and loads of preferred sun cream is a must when on holiday in the Seychelles. We would also recommend some after sun in case of any sunburn.

Beaches of Seychelles-Anse Forbans

Supermarkets and shops: Approximately 1.3km away from the Chalets Anse Forbans or about 10 minute drive you have the well stocked Seychelles Style Supermarket called Sekaar- located in the small town of Quatre Borne. You will find - cheeses, drinks, meat, veg, pasta, baby food, nappies etc here. This supermarket does accept credit cards and if they are not too busy will help you carry your groceries to the car.It closes at lunch time from 13h30 until 14h30 but is then open until 20h00.

Buying Fish: To get fresh fish around the Anse Forbans area you have to be awake early and the fish is usually on sale on the beach from 07h30 until 08h00 otherwise the next option would be in Anse Royale area- opposite the Petrol Station- again try to get there early.

The Fish Factory in Victoria called Oceana Fisheries is where alot our guests would buy fish frozen to bring back to the Anse Forbans for BBQs etc.. it is pre- cleaned and filleted as well so this makes for a lot less mess!!

Fresh Veg and Fruit- we would have alot of local stalls again on the roadside so watch out the best would be in Anse Royale close to the Seychelles community centre and opposite the Cable and Wireless offices or else you can try on the route to Police Bay just past Anse Intendance.

Bakery:You may also want to try Lai Lam bakery in Victoria close to the Victoria Sir Selwyns Market in Market Street for fresh rolls and bread- always busy but worth the wait. At the market you will also find vegetables and fruit and an assortment of fish.

Spices: If you are shopping for some Spices then you can visit the Sir Selwyns market in Market street or else Jardin du Roi is now producing their own spices and they are located in Anse Royale and a highly recommended spot to visit.

Seychelles Indian Ocean Games Ends

The Seychelles has closed their 8th Indian Ocean Islands Games with muchpride and jubilation and it has been described as the best ever organisedsince its launching since in 1979.

The Seychelles had one of their all time best Indian Ocean island Gamesfinishing in second place after Reunion. The tropical paradise was crowned the champions in Volleyball for bothmen and women teams, men basketball team, football, table tennis for womensingle and in weightlifting.

It is for the first time in the history of the Games that Seychelles hadbeen crowned the best for both teams in volleyball for men in basketball andafter a long wait of over three decades, it won the football finals. In weightliftingSeychelles has come at the top of the table winning 30 gold medals. Shrone Austin broke an IOIG record and won 5gold medals in her swimming races.

The closing ceremony was held at the unity stadium at Roche Caimen markedby a musical show and fireworks. The IOIG flame which had been burning over thepast week was extinguished marking the end of the Games and the IOIG flag wasgiven to Reunion who will be the next country to host the 9th IOIG in 2015.

August 15th 2011 see the celebration of the "Feast of the Assumption," on La Digue island Seychelles.

The feast is very popular in the Seychelles and attracts both locals and tourists to the island which is always buzzing with much excitement during this period. The feast is spread over a couple of days and tends to finish late in the evening.

The main day of celebrations is on the 15th August with mass at "La Grotto" which is attended by the Bishop of Seychelles. Once the mass is finished it is traditional for a procession through the lanes of La Digue to St. Mary’s Church.

The origins of Creole

Créole is a french term which is used to describe a person whose native language is Creole. Creole is spoken today in: Martinique, Guadeloupe ,Guyane, Haiti, parts of Louisana, Domanica, St Luica, Grenada and Trinidad as well as the Indian Ocean Islands of Reunion, Mauritius, Rodrigues and the Seychelles.

The origins of the African version of the Creole language was a result of the meeting of the French colony and slaves from West Africa in the 17th and 18th Century.

In Africa the English word Creole drives from French Créole which in turn is a Portuguese crioulo- (Crioulo, one of the oldest of the Portuguese creole languages, is by far the most widely spoken). The word was derived in the 15th Century in the trading and military posts established by the Portuguese in West Africa and Cape Verde. Originally the term would have referred to the descendants of the Portuguese settlers who were born and raised locally in the outposts. The word then spread to other languages. The Creole term would originally have been used primary for European descents but eventually it was dominated by numerous people of mixed Portuguese and African Origin.

Seychelles Islands Flag

The Seychelles Islands has 3 Official National Languages namely that of Creole ( or Kreol or Seselwa), French and English. The Creole language in the Seychelles holds high esteem unlike that of its neighbouring country of Mauritius as Seychelles acknowledges Creole as an official language.

Creole is spoken by approximately 94% of the Seychelles Population while English and French are also widely spoken and written. The Seychelles Islands are hosting the 8th Indian Ocean Island Games for the second time since its inauguration games in 1979.

A past record of the Seychelles Achievements in the Indian Ocean Island Games:

At the Indian Ocean Island Games in Mauritius in 2003 : Seychelles won 113 Medals ( 43 Gold, 40 Silver, and 30 Bronze). They completed the games in third place.
At the Indian Ocean Island Games in Madagascar in 2007: Seychelles won 99 medals ( 35 gold, 27 silver and 37 Bronze).
At the Indian Ocean Island Games in Reunion in 1998: Seychelles won 68 medals (13 gold, 26 silver and 29 bronze).
At the Indian Ocean Island Games Inaugural Games in 1979 in Reunion: Seychelles won 29 medals (11 gold, 8 silver and 10 bronze).
At the Indian Ocean Island Games in Mauritius in 1985: Seychelles won 24 medals (6 gold, 9 silver and 9 bronze).
At the Indian Ocean Island Games in Madagascar in 1990: Seychelles won 23 medals (6 gold, 4 silver and 13 bronze).

Sustainable Tourism in the Seychelles- Chalets Anse Forbans

Chalets d' Anse Forbans is participating in on a voluntary basis to reduce the amount of glass waste it produces for landfill.

The recent project launched by the Sustainability for Seychelles (S4S) is to divert glass waste from the dumping site and put it to good use. The glass could be used as construction fill or a raw material for artisan's crafts.

Kevin Betsy gets a call to play in the Seychelles Indian Ocean Island Games

The Seychelles Indian Ocean Games is just days away and the English born midfielder Kevin Betsy is coming to play in the Seychelles Team.

Kevin is of Seychellois descent and follows in the footsteps of his father Lewis, who played in the inaugural games in 1979 representing the Seychelles Islands. What an honour it must be for Kevin to come back to the Seychelles and play in the 8th Indian Ocean Games and whoo, we are so excited to see him play on our soil.

Kevin currently plays in midfield for Wycombe and signed a permanent contract with them, in January 2010.

Seychelles are the host nation of the 8th Indian Ocean Games, facing Comoros, Maldives and Mauritius in Group A while Madagascar, Mayotte and Reunion battle it out in Group B.

Indian Ocean Islands Games in the Seychelles Update

The 8th Indian Ocean Games in the Seychelles update: Re-draw for the ladies basketball.

The ladies draw of the basketball competition had to be re-done on the 23rd July 2011 as a result of the withdraw of one of the participating teams, namely that of the Maldives Ladies Basketball team. The withdraw was within the games regulations time frame and the new draw was conducted in the presence of majority of the COJI Committee members.

The initial draw had all the teams within two groups.

Group A: Seychelles, Reunion and Comoros.

Group B: Madagascar, Maldives and Mayotte.

As a result of the initial draw it placed Seychelles in the same group as their rivals, namely that of Reunion.

The new draw conducted on the 23rd July saw Reunion moving to Group B which allows Seychelles a greater chance to reach the semi-finals and hopefully finals.

Airlines flying to the Seychelles Islands- Etihad

A New Airline Flying to the Seychelles...

Seychelles will be shortly welcome the national airline of the UAE Etihad.

Etihad will start flying to the Seychelles from Abu Dhabi in November 2011. The Seychelles Islands are the 68th destination in the global network of Etihad.

The National UAE Carrier commenced its flying operations in November 2003 and it is stated that they have become the fastest growing airline in the history of commercial aviation.

The airline currently operates a fleet of 57 aircraft and close to 1,000 flights a week the fleet , consisting of: two Airbus A319s; 13 A320s; 16 A330-200s; three A330-300s; four A340-500s; seven A340-600s; six Boeing 777-300ERs; two A300-600Fs; two A330-200Fs and two MD11Fs.

The Aircraft that will be flying between the Seychelles and Abu Dhabi will be an Airbus A320 with a configuration of two cabins – Pearl Business (16 seats) and Coral Economy (120 seats).

The Flights to the Seychelles International Airport are scheduled as follows*

Banana Sauce

2 Medium Sized bananas

1 clove and a small bay leaf

pinch cayenne pepper

1/2 teaspn Guava jelly

1 glass water

Wash and peel bananas and put all ingredients in a saucepan. Boil for 10 minutes then sieve. Serve hot or cold.

"Pictures of Seychelles ... to make you dream". This is the theme of the Seychelles Tourism Board Annual Photographic Competition for 2011 aimed at the young and inspiring future photographers.

The organisers are looking for images that capture the pure beauty of the Seychelles. The images can be of the natural beauty of the Seychelles, Seychelles Flora and Fauna or even shots of people going about their natural day to day lives on the islands. These images will then be used in the Seychelles' tourism brochures that are distributed worldwide promoting the Seychelles as the preferred Island Holiday Destination. .

Conditions of the Competition:

1. Particpants must be between the age of 12 and 16 years.

2. The Photos of the Seychelles can be in colour or black and white.

3. A maximum of 2 images of the Seychelles can be submitted per contestant.

4. The images depicting the Seychelles Islands must be the work of the contestant and not have been previously published.

4. All images submitted for the Seychelles Image contest should be accompanied by a short description of no more than 25 words.

5. Deadline submission is 1st September 2011.

The winning contestant will win SCR 10, 000 (ten thousand Seychelles rupees) and the photo will remain the property of the Seychelles Tourism Board.

To enter this competition all participants are required to collect and complete a registration form available at the Seychelles Tourism Board Information Offices in Victoria, Praslin and La Digue.
