The Seychelles islands are experiencing a large amount of publicity at the moment with the Costa Allegra Cruise liner powerless overnight and floating adrift in its water.
The Costa Allegra was expected in Port Victoria later today ( Tuesday 28th Feb) however a distressed signal was received late on Monday evening. The ship had experienced a fire in its generator room and now has no power. Only its emergency battery was allowing communication with the mainland for assistance. At first light in the Seychelles 2 tug boats and the Seychelles air force wing where dispatched out to assist the ship from the main island of Mahe Seychelles. Luckly a french fishing vessel had reached it already and was able to assist with radio communication.
The problem that now exists is the Costa Allegra passengers will be the airlifting back to the main island of the Seychelles. A total of 636 passengers and 413 crew is going to take some time. Local Seychelles Rumour is the ship is being towed closer to the island of Alphonse yet the media are reporting the island of Desroches. The aircrafts that can land on these islands only have a capacity of 20 passengers at a time. Never mind the luggage!!! Airlifting is meant to start as of tomorrow. Next question has Seychelles got enough Accommodaiton available for all these unexpected guests. It has been stated that they can easily be on the island for 2 days until the boat has been restored back into sailing condition.
The Costa Allegra engineers are said to be already on their way to Mahe Island Seychelles to start the maintenance work necessary after this fire. You tend to wonder what fate this cruise liner company has at the moment, as just 6 weeks ago the sister ship Costa Concordia capsized in Italy.
The Costa Allegra started its journey in Mauritius and over its journey is meant to cover the islands of Madagascar, Seychelles as well as stopping in Oman, Egypt, Jordan, Savona(Italy) the trip is scheduled for a month.
